Renew Your .Com Domains Before Oct. 1

I rather jokingly blogged about it before. Be sure to renew your .com and/or .net domain names before October 1 this year.

The reason is because the VeriSign COM/NET Registry will raise their prices for such again by October 1, 2008. I’ll include a quote and link from their press release on the subject.

VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), the leading provider of Internet infrastructure for the networked world, today announced, effective as of October 1, 2008, an increase in registry domain name fees for .com and .net, per its agreements with ICANN.

VeriSign announced that the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.42 to $6.86 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $3.85 to $4.23.

In case you just dropped by and aren’t aware how this affects you as a .com domain holder, VeriSign manages the authoritative database Registry for all .com and .net domain names. What they say, registrars like Go Daddy and Moniker mostly follow.

I also blogged last year that VeriSign raised their prices from $6.00 to $6.42. As that quote said, it’ll go up to $6.86.

As history later showed, various registrars like Go Daddy, NameCheap, even Moniker raised their prices slightly before October 17 last year in anticipation of the price hike. Only a few like Register.com and Network Solutions absorbed it, but that’s because they’ve been consistently charging higher fees.

Already I’ve read that domain registrars Name.com, eNom and Go Daddy have raised their prices again to prepare for this one. I’ll be renewing my domain names shortly, and I suggest you do the same especially for those you intend to keep long term.

Don’t be late!
