Is Go Daddy Requiring ID To Transfer Out?

Just now, I’ve seen some people tweeting (messaging via Twitter) that domain registrar Go Daddy is requiring or asking for ID to transfer out of them. Of course, most (if not all) of them are outraged.

I asked if anyone can show anything requiring that. Someone was kind enough to share it online, and another gave a copy as well. (thank you sir!)

Here’s what it looks like:

The words “Protected Registration” gave me a clue. I checked Go Daddy’s support site to see if it’s got anything.

Sure enough, it did: it’s their Protected Registration service. As their site indicated:

Protected Registration is a premium service you can apply to many of the domain names you purchase or already registered with us. The service helps ensure that you retain registration of your domain name, regardless of expiration dates or attempts to transfer.

Their Protected Registration service does certain things, two of which I’ll highlight here:

Domain Ownership Protection — Protects you from losing your domain name if you forget to renew it, or if we can’t charge your credit card.

Deadbolt Transfer Protection — Puts your domain name on lockdown, making it impossible for any inadvertent, accidental, or malicious transfer.

A trend among domain registrars like Go Daddy and, say, Moniker is they’ll offer extra security for your domain name. It’ll cost extra, but that’s completely optional.

Go Daddy’s support site indeed confirms a scanned copy of one’s ID is needed. The kind of ID needed is depending on the details of the domain registration.

Admittedly I haven’t asked Go Daddy about that. But I’m very sure they won’t require any ID except for that scenario above, or if there are “issues” (knock on wood) with the domain registration itself.

Feel free to comment below, spread the word online, or contact me if you need some help.

Update 12/29/2011: Go Daddy has a copy of the exact same thing on their web site.
